Artist Statement

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, Sarah States has always had an interest in discovery. Seeing photography as an exploration, her work emphasizes (and often dwells on) the importance of the process of photographing. The subject of this exploration is often the Other and the questions that gendered images can raise within the viewer. She regularly collaborates with models, photographers, and those with ideas to share, and she believes that this collaboration can challenge both her notions of art and existence.
